Baanjan elementary school was founded on the 9th of September, 1957. It is located in the Udon Thani province of northeastern Thailand. At the time, many refugees of the Vietnam war fled from Vietnam and Laos, and crossed the border into Thailand. The purpose of the school was to accommodate the children of the refugees, providing them with a place to study. By the time the war ended in 1976, many refugees had grown attached to this place, and did not wish to return to their homeland. Many children who were orphaned, or left with only one parent stayed, and the school continued to operate for them. Baanjan elementary school was eventually adopted into the Thai educational system, and became an official school. The core principle behind Baanjan elementary school’s education is to bestow students with Buddhist values. The principal, Dr. Worawuth believes that in order for a child to become a useful member of society, they must learn how to conduct themselves righteously in addition to academic knowledge.
Banjaan elementary school had over two thousand students at the time of its foundation. Over the years, the number has decreased to only fifty due to the falling birthrate. The Thai Ministry of Education originally planned on shutting the school down, and moving the students to other schools nearby. However, most locals did not have enough income to send their children far away to study. It would put too much pressure on many families economically, which would, in turn, cause them to not send their children to school at all. Therefore, many residents do not want the government to shut the school down.
Motivation for volunteer service:
Teacher Pipat is from Thailand. His relatives came to the village in 1988 and built a temple, so that the villagers have a place to worship Buddha, listen to Buddhist doctrines and teachings, and educate the local people. Children should be guided to the path of kindness and away from drugs with the power of religion. As teacher Pipat is from Bangkok and of Chinese descent, he teaches Chinese to locals, and brings people from Taiwan to help every year, so that the children know how to be a good person.
There are many children in the village who attend Baanjan Elementary School. Teacher Pipat met the teacher of Baanjan Elementary School by chance. The elementary school teachers hope that Baanjan Elementary School can give Chinese classes to attract more students to the school. For that purpose, teacher Pipat leads a volunteer group to Baanjan Elementary School to teach Chinese. Baanjan elementary school has attracted more students locally and from the two neighboring villages since they started holding Chinese lessons. This would hopefully help persuade the government to delay the abolition. The school has grown from 50 students in 2016 to a total of 180 students now. We hope to expose them to Chinese and promote Chinese culture through our services.
